Getting enough sleep matters. It impacts your learning, your happiness, and your health. Several recent studies have confirmed the importance of sleep, and we suspect there will be many more in the next decade. Getting enough sleep appears to be a major problem in the United States. Our proposed solution: Sleep rules.
This is an area where it is ok to put your foot down. Don’t be cowed by stories of “friends” who have no bed time or stay up until midnight. Create rules and stick to them. Be sure to include yourself so that you don’t get nicknamed Mr. or Ms. Grumpy. If people in your family have trouble falling asleep, try to find solutions without pushing back the bed time: include or increase daily exercise, check on diet and eating times, try different ways to wind down, etc.
“Sleep rules” because with more sleep (within reason), learning is easier, more fun, and you and your family just feel good. Enjoy!
